As a character, I like Merida. Energetic, spirited, appealing. But personally I would hate her guts. There’s quite a few reasons, but mostly:

You know that tapestry that Merida destroyed with one fell swoop of her sword?

Elinor had been working on that tapestry for more than a decade.

As a daughter of someone who sews/crochets/embroiders, and as someone who has dabbled in all those things, I know how much time, effort, and attention to detail goes into that work. I for one was on Elinor’s side when she threw Merida’s bow into the fire (especially since later on Merida has another bow so aside from her first bow having some sentimental value it’s not that big a deal???).

Yeah it’s wrong to throw your kid’s first bow into the fire, but Jesus. After working on a tapestry for more than ten years (which is a portrait of your family), I think we can excuse Elinor’s heat of the moment reaction to her work being destroyed by her daughter. Oh, and the whole potential threat of war that Merida just started too.

Merida has zero respect for her mother, and that irks me. You would think that even a wild child like Merida would have at least an ounce of respect for her mother. Especially since Elinor, though strict, isn’t a bad mother at all (especially when you get the vibe that it’s actually Elinor running the kingdom and not Fergus).

Better hope there isn’t another family schism in the following years, because this new tapestry that isn’t anywhere near finished will take years to finish, and it would make perfect fodder for Merida.

Oh, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the dress Merida destroyed was also made by her mother.

Given that Elinor was so thrilled to see Merida in that dress, I think we can assume Elinor made that dress just for the occasion of the clans meeting.

Yeah sorry Merida, but if you were real I don’t think we could hang out for extended periods of time. Elinor’s my girl.
